Ireland Breaks Solar Power Records as Renewable Energy Surges
Solar power reached new heights in Ireland last month, generating its largest-ever share of electricity for the national grid, according to provisional figures released by EirGrid.
Solar energy supplied 6.5% of all electricity produced in May 2025, equivalent to 173,163 megawatt-hours (MWh). This marks a dramatic rise from May 2023, when solar accounted for just 2.7% of generation. EirGrid, the state-owned company responsible for managing Ireland’s electricity grid and market, also reported several new solar generation records, including a peak output of 755 megawatts (MW) recorded on May 17.
Ireland’s electricity system is currently capable of handling up to 75% of its power from non- synchronous renewable sources like wind and solar at any one time, a technical limit known as the System Non-Synchronous Penetration (SNSP). To increase this capacity, EirGrid is rolling out major infrastructure projects to reinforce and upgrade the national grid.
